“Our long term aim is to grow everything that we need in the camps, and not be reliant on humanitarian aid." - Project manager of the Growing Hope vegetable project
The Sahrawi refugees are the people of Western Sahara who were forced to seek refuge in camps in the Algerian desert after the Moroccan occupation in 1976
Life in the camps is very difficult as all of the essential resources for living have to be brought in from outside the desert by International Aid.
The WSSG is a charitable trust born out of a longstanding relationship dating from 2000 when a small group of Sahrawi children visited Manchester. Read more about us here.
We are currently supporting the Growing Hope sustainable vegetable farming project, which is run by a Sahrawi team in the camps. Since we began fundraising in 2018 we have raised enough to enable the project to begin building infrastructure, growing crops and improving the diet of the Sahrawi people. They are moving ever closer to reaching their aim of becoming self-reliant.
