Christmas Appeal

Over £300 raised – thank you all for your support

Sustainable Vegetable Project

Thanks to so many generous donations and fundraising activities we have now raised the amazing sum of £18,216 and are now in a position to buy equipment and infrastructure to make the project we have all dreamt about for so long a reality on the ground. This has never been more urgent given the collapse of the 29 year-old ceasefire following incursion by the Moroccan armed forces in Sahrawi controlled land and the increased need for the Sahrawi in the refugee camps to provide for themselves.

The aim is that the vegetable project becomes self-sustainable. However, we do envisage a period as things are begun where additional support would be necessary to give the fledgling project every chance of succeeding as soon as possible.

As an alternative idea for Christmas and the festive period you could buy your loved ones a gift that truly makes a difference.

A Gift of Mariam’s Wages

This is Mariam a mother of five and a grandmother to 15 children. She is a devoted mother to all her children especially her eldest daughter who suffers from mental health problems. Mariam has the responsibility of taking care of her daughters’ mental and physical wellbeing. She needs to support her children in spite of the fact that she has no income and her husband is dead. She used to work in the Smara camp garden until it went out of business with no retirement money nor any compensation. She always faces everyday problems with a strong will and a big smile. Mariam will be employed on the project to work in the greenhouses as a full time gardener giving her the chance to earn much needed cash to support her family at a time when male members of the family are away at the defensive sand wall at the edge of Saharawi administered territory facing the reality of an armed struggle. A gift of £25 pays her wages for a week. The project will employ 5 people.

A Gift of Water

To begin the project, water will be bought in and stored alongside the greenhouses to support the project during the growing season. A gift of £50 goes towards ensuring that there is a regular supply of all important water. We are currently exploring a collaboration with Oxfam to explore the potential of adding hydroponic growing systems  to the project.

If you support the project and buy one of the gifts above we will send you by email a printable voucher with photographs and a description of the project for you to give as your present.
