- Highlights:
- The team visited Laayoune camp in Feb 2023 for the Sahara Marathon, and spent time weeding, chatting to the local Growing Hope crew, and learning more about how things are going.
- They noticed salt build-up in the irrigation pipes — the project is working hard to keep water flowing to the crops.
- Plans are underway to build a 10 × 10 × 10 m water reservoir, which will help reduce salt and improve watering.
- The core team fixed some storm-damaged fencing, and they’ve made good progress on their irrigation system.
- Growing Hope is now selling veggies to local shops, and sometimes distributing produce for free to families who need it.
- They’ve started growing new seedlings in the polytunnel and also outside — things are really developing.
- Fundraising update: they raised £2,014 during the Sahara Marathon week to support the project.
- Future goals: buy a second water pump, build a small house for the supervisor who’s on site all the time, finish the reservoir, and build up their contingency fund.
